Wimbledon crowns a new men’s champion
Centre Court was the stage for an all-time classic final this past weekend as Carlos Alcaraz became the new Men’s Wimbledon Champion. In doing so he overcame one of the greatest players to ever pick up a racket, the seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, in a five-set thriller. At just 20 years of age Alcaraz is the third youngest man to win a Wimbledon men’s title and the youngest since Boris Becker’s 1986 victory at the age of 18. Even more impressive, Alcaraz was competing in just his fourth-ever grass court tournament, facing a man who incredibly hadn’t lost on Centre Court for a decade.
The match was much anticipated by tennis fans around the world, pitting the top two seeds against each other - the new star of tennis Alcaraz up against the record 23-time Grand Slam Champion Djokovic. The final itself did not disappoint with engrossing rallies that seemed never-ending, featuring amazing shots from both competitors who gave everything on Centre Court for the best part of five hours. However, it was to be the young Spaniard’s day as a new name was carved into Wimbledon history and a new era dawned for men’s tennis.
It was a fantastic final for everyone watching on TV and those lucky enough to be there live. There were shades of Nadal winning his first title against Roger Federer in the dusk on Centre Court in 2008. The similarities will continue between Alcaraz and his compatriot Nadal who will himself be looking for one last shot at Grand Slam glory next year at Roland-Garros, perhaps setting up another classic between the old guard and new.
