England women win historic Six Nations Grand Slam in front of world-record crowd
Twickenham was the scene of a landmark day for England international women’s rugby as the Red Roses secured a historic Six Nations Grand Slam victory. A crowd of 58,498 were in attendance to watch the Grand Slam decider between England and France, a world-record for women’s international rugby.
The game itself did not disappoint and proved a thrilling finale to this year’s Six Nations, with England winning 38-33 in front of a jubilant crowd. After early pressure from France, England’s women produced the perfect start as they cruised to a 33-0 half-time lead. It was a stunning 25-minute first-half display as tries from Abby Dow, No 8 Alex Matthews and captain Marlie Packer looked to put England in complete control. However, a second half fight-back from France, scoring a flurry of five tries made for a nervous finish. England, thanks in part to the amazing support from a record-breaking Twickenham crowd, managed to hold on as the Red Roses went on to win a remarkable fifth Six Nations title in a row.
The 58,498 people in attendance for Saturday’s finale surpassed the previous record for a women’s rugby game of 42,579 at last year’s women’s rugby world cup. England were on the wrong side of the scoreline that day, losing to New Zealand. But the festival-like atmosphere at the home of English rugby proved enough to push England over the line in what was a day of redemption for the Red Roses and a historic day for women’s sport.
