Australia beat South Africa to win sixth T20 World Cup
Australia won the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, beating South Africa by 19 runs in Cape Town this past weekend. It was a comfortable victory for the defending champions who have extended their stronghold on the trophy by making it three championship crowns on the bounce and their sixth overall. South Africa put up a strong fight in front of a sell-out Newlands in Cape Town. However, home support wasn’t enough to overcome Australia’s 156-6.
After losing the toss South Africa fought valiantly in the opening innings, spurred on by a jubilant crowd in Cape Town, taking regular wickets to keep Australia’s run rate down. However, the South African batters could not match their strong start in the field, only reaching 137-6. Australia’s Beth Mooney was the star of the show, striking an incredible 74 not out. With trophies now becoming a formality for this Australian side, Australia captain Meg Lanning said, “It is a pretty special effort. All the teams came hard at us, but to be able to perform throughout the tournament I am super proud.” It was also a strong tournament for England, who made it all the way to the semi-finals before falling just short to hosts South Africa.
