100 days to go until the start of Roland-Garros
The eyes of the tennis world will soon be returning to Paris as the second Grand Slam of the year gets underway at Roland-Garros in just 100 days. A much-anticipated highlight in the tennis calendar, it will signify the climax of the clay-court season and is one of the more glamorous stops on the tennis ATP tour.
The ‘king of Clay’ Rafael Nadal will be hoping to extend his unbelievable record at the tournament with an incredible 14 French championships and only three career losses at Roland-Garros. While Nadal remains the one to beat, there are many younger promising players looking to make a name for themselves at this year’s tournament. Young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz is the world number two at just 19 and is the one to watch. He is seen as the successor to Nadal by many experts and, after winning the US Open, will be hoping to be the one to break Nadal’s fierce hold on the title.
The women’s singles competition is equally finally poised. Defending champion Iga Świątek is the early favourite and will be hoping to win her third championship at Roland-Garros and fourth overall major at just 21. The young Polish star will have tough competition if she is to win back-to-back titles, while British hopes will once again sit on the young shoulders of Emma Raducanu. One thing is for sure, Roland-Garros will provide two weeks of world-class tennis. The fortnight will feature some of the finest men’s and women’s tennis players from around the world as they battle it out for the iconic Coupe des Mousquetaires and Coupe Suzanne Lenglen.
