Holger Rune causes major upset in Paris Masters final
Danish teenage sensation, Holger Rune, shocked the tennis world on Sunday as he defeated Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final. The Dane recovered from a set down to win 3-6 6-3 7-5 and claim his maiden Masters title. At just 19 he becomes the youngest winner of the tournament since Boris Becker in 1986. The win sees Rune lifted into the top 10 world rankings for the first time in his career as well as becoming the first Danish player ranked that highly for almost 50 years.
The win was justly deserved as Rune defeated four other top 10 players on the way to his stunning victory in the French capital. Defending champion Djokovic, who was going for a record-extending 7th Paris title, was full of praise for the young Dane, saying “You’ve put in a lot of hours of hard work, it’s paying off for you and your future is bright.” High praise from one of tennis’ all-time greats showing that the Paris Masters may very well have unearthed a brand new star.
