Season-Ending Showdown at Paris Masters
The Paris Masters begins this Saturday as the hard-court season approaches its climax. Rafael Nadal is set to make his return looking to reclaim his world No.1 ranking. It has been an emotional year for the 22-time Grand Slam winner, after triumphing at the Australian Open and at Roland Garros, to then playing his part last month in the poetic finale to Roger Federer’s career. Recently, injuries have cost him with his last major appearance being a disappointing early exit in the US Open quarters as he continues to battle with the abdominal injury that forced him to retire early at Wimbledon.
However, doctors are confident Nadal will make a full recovery in time for the start of the Paris Masters. With rumours circulating of defending champion Novak Djokovic skipping this year’s tournament and with Wimbledon runner-up, and the mercurial Nick Krygios already missing the prestigious tournament with his continuing knee problems, this could prove a great opportunity for Nadal.
The Paris Masters is a staple in the tennis calendar with players battling for points at the end of the season. The tournament takes place at Accor Arena in Bercy, in the southeast of Paris, in a 14,000-seater stadium, which has seen the likes of inaugural winner Boris Becker, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, as well as record six-time champion Novak Djokovic.
