Cameron Smith wins the 150th Open golf championship on gripping final day at St Andrews
Cameron Smith stunned the world as he overturned a four-stroke deficit on the final day to win the Open at the Home of Golf. It was a historic 150th Open with record crowds as the world’s greatest players descended on St Andrews to battle it out for the iconic Claret Jug. The tournament, which was played on the Old Course for the 30th time, did not disappoint as fans were left amazed by the quality they witnessed from the Australian winner, hitting five consecutive birdies to win the Major and lift himself to number two in the world.
Former The Open champion and fan favourite, Rory McIlroy, led overnight but fell into third place behind runner-up Cameron Young on what was a thrilling final day at St Andrews. McIlroy was well placed for his fifth Major, but it was not to be his day as Cameron Smith produced an outstanding level of golf to land his first ever Major title. Smith earned his place among the greats who have lifted the Claret Jug on a magnificent record-breaking day of golf. His final round was the lowest ever score to win The Open at St Andrews and his 20-under-par equalled the lowest 72-hole total in men’s Major history, as well as eclipsing by one shot Tiger Woods’ record here from 2000.
Earlier on Friday all eyes were on Tiger Woods as he bid farewell to St Andrews, a course he has described as ‘his favourite in the world’ and the scene of his Open victories in 2000 and 2005. It was an emotional return to Fife for the former World Number One, who was brought to tears when he was given a standing ovation on the 18th hole. In a heartfelt address he said that he hoped to play in The Open again, but that it’s unlikely we’ll ever see him playing in the tournament at St Andrews. Eagled-eyed viewers noted that Woods never stopped to wave goodbye while crossing the iconic stone bridge, as so many others have chosen to do so, giving hope to many that he will return to the famous course one day. While retirement looms on the horizon for Woods, those who were at St Andrews were honoured to be in the presence of a sporting legend as history played out in front of their eyes.
