1. India
With one of the highest win rates of all teams participating in the ICC T20 World Cup, it’s no surprise that India is one of the most highly regarded teams in the competition. A firm fan favourite in the international stage, all eyes will be on India to see if it can return to the throne after a close final match against Sri Lanka in 2014 landed them the runner-up spot. A team built around the best batting line-up in the tournament with three batsmen in the T20 top 10 (#2 – Lokesh Rahul, #9 – Virat Kohli, #10 – Rohit Sharma), expect them to post big totals.
2. Australia
Australia has always been a strong contender in any international cricket competition. Having played dozens of matches in the ICC T20 World Cup in the past, they are in a strong position thanks to their experienced and world-class players. While it has yet to win an ICC T20 World Cup, Australia did come a close second in 2010. The most well rounded team in the tournamnet featuring five players in the T20 top 10 (#2 All rounder – Glenn Maxwell, #3 Batsman – Aaron Finch, #4 Bowler – Adam Zampa, #5 Batsman – Glenn Maxwell, #9 Bowler – Ashton Agar) they are going to be hard to beat.
3. England
England has historically been a cricket powerhouse and is always one of the favourites to win. Having won the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup, cricketing fans expected a lot from the English squad, but they failed to make any solid appearances until 2016 when they landed themselves the runner-up spot against the West Indies. A very strong batting line up featuring Dawid Malan, Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales, Jason Roy and Joe Root, expect who ever plays England to be chasing big totals full of fireworks.
4. Pakistan
Pakistan took home the trophy in 2009, but hasn’t since appeared in the finals, despite strong performances throughout the years. An incredibly robust team on the international stage, Paksitan has appeared in every ICC T20 World Cup. As the current no.1 and featuring some of the best players in the world spearheaded by no.1 T20 batsman Babar Azam and a bowling line-up featuring Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan they could easily win the tournament.
5. West Indies
As the only team to win two ICC T20 World Cups, could West Indies be the first team to win two consecutive ICC T20 World Cups and three in total? It’s very possible. The squad is highly skilled and one of the most explosive batting and bowling line-ups who are never out of a match. If they could be more consistant and bring it all together during the tournament they would be our no.1 team. But we feel age and retirement from key members is too much for West Indies to overcome.
6. New Zealand
New Zealand has made it to the semi-final round of the ICC T20 World Cup twice (once in 2007 and again in 2016) but is yet to make it any further. New Zealand has been steadily improving at T20 cricket and we could see the team break into the finals stage in this years ICC T20 World Cup with renewed vigour. With only a couple of players in the top 10 (#4 batman – Colin Munro and #3 bowler – Mitchell Santner) we see then relying on immaculate fielding and input from all the players with the bat and ball if they want to lift the T20 World Cup.
7. South Africa
South Africa is, without a doubt, one of the strongest international cricket teams in the world, and its strength in T20 has really shown over the past few ICC T20 World Cups. While it has yet to land a spot in the finals, South Africa has consistently made it to the semi-final stages and has one of the highest win rates in T20 cricket. Without the big T20 name players of the other teams, South Africa would require everyone to perform to be crowned ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Champions.
8. Afghanistan
The only team on this list that has not appeared in every ICC T20 World Cup. While they have a relatively low win rate compared to the other teams on this list, they have been showing a lot of promise and have been steadily improving despite a lack of experience. Boosting the two best ICC T20 bowlers (Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman) as well as the best all rounder in the world (Mohammad Nabi), pick Afghanistan for an upset or two, but we do not see them winning the T20 World cup 2020.
