Medvedev wins his fourth title of the year in Miami
This Sunday saw former world number one, Daniil Medvedev, win his first Miami Open title by beating Jannik Sinner in straight sets. It was a dominant display from the Russian who now rises to world number 4 after his victory at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. His opponent on the night, Sinner, who at just 21 is ranked world number 11, claimed a shock win over top seed Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals but could not recreate that form against Medvedev, whose baseline game was just too strong for the young Italian. The Russian continued his impressive form this year, losing just one match in the five events he’s contested in 2023. With Roland-Garros coming up, Medvedev’s hopes will be high for adding to his one career Grand Slam championship.
Earlier in the weekend there was a new women’s champion crowned in South Beach after Petra Kvitová defeated Elena Rybakina in straight sets to finish off a thrilling run to her first Miami Open title. Conditions were tough, with intense heat and humidity, but Kvitová, 33, showed off her power and experience throughout the match as she beat her first top 10 opponent of the year and won her first tournament of 2023 in the process. The two-time Wimbledon champion has long been considered one of the best players in the world and Saturday proved to be a monumental victory in Kvitová’s career, her first Masters 1000 win. Just like all players on the circuit, Kvitová will be turning her attention to Roland-Garros in the coming weeks as the build-up to the second Grand Slam of the year gets underway.
