England beat Pakistan to win T20 World Cup final in Melbourne
England have made history by becoming the first team to hold both the ICC one-day and T20 World Cups at the same time. They did so after defeating Pakistan by five wickets in Melbourne in an intense final. England had to overcome an incredible atmosphere as a roaring Pakistan support flooded the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with noise. Chasing down 138 gave England a great chance thanks to fantastic bowling from Sam Curran and Adil Rashid. Then a string of early wickets put the match on a knife edge. However, after a cruelly timed injury to Pakistan bowler Shaheen Afridi, England would go on to captalise and win their second ICC T20 World Cup with six balls to spare.
It was fitting that Ben Stokes, so often the hero for England and the man who inspired their famous ICC Cricket World Cup win in 2019, was there at the end, just as he was for the 50-over final three years ago in England. Scoring a masterful half-century, Stokes once again dragged his team to victory on the world stage. So often the man for the big occasion, if he wasn’t already, Stokes has gone down as one of England’s all-time great sportsmen. Sunday’s victory will be remembered as another one of England’s greatest cricketing victories as they have now built a legacy of tournament wins with the white ball, achieving things no other team has in limited-overs cricket.
