The Open returns to Carnoustie in 2018
All eyes will be on Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland this July, as the course plays host to The Open Championship for the eighth time.
Since 1860, The Open has been played over some of the world’s most memorable courses and the legacy of it’s champions is undisputed as it is the oldest and most international tournament in professional golf. Carnoustie has earned its reputation as one of the toughest golf destinations in the world, promising spectacular views and a challenging course.
The last three editions of The Open at Carnoustie have resulted in a play-off to determine the Champion Golfer, with Paul Lawrie’s win in 1999 ranking as one of the most iconic major finishes in recent history. In 2007, the last time The Open was played at Carnoustie, fans witnessed a thrilling play-off between Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia. Going into the final round six strokes behind Garcia, Harrington pulled it back in a remarkable way to eventually win with a bogey on the final hole, making him the first Irish winner of The Open since Fred Daly 60 years earlier.
With it’s exposed stretch along the Angus coast, a windy day at Carnoustie can challenge even the strongest of golfers. As Sir Michael Bonallack put it, “When the wind is blowing, it is the toughest golf course in Britain. And when it’s not blowing, it’s probably still the toughest.” The bunkers on the course are perfectly positioned to capture even the best of shots and it is also a very long, narrow golf course that, at 7,421 yards, is the longest of any of the Open venues.
Between 19-22 July, the 147th tournament will return to the Scottish town with the underlying anticipation of another dramatic event.
