England come up short in Autumn International opener
England got off to a disappointing start to their Autumn International campaign after a shock defeat to Argentina. Despite two tries and 19 points from fit-again captain Owen Farrell, it was not enough as England were stunned by a narrow 29-30 defeat. England were roared on by 80,000 home fans at a packed-out Twickenham. However, Argentina star winger Emiliano Boffelli would be the hero of the match, silencing the crowd by scoring 25 points to give the Pumas their first victory at Twickenham for 16 years.
Tougher tests loom on the horizon for England, as they are set to face New Zealand and reigning world champions South Africa later in the month. After this upset, England rugby fans will all agree that Eddie Jones’ side must improve their form if they are to stand any chance at next year’s Rugby World Cup.
In other Autumn International matches over the weekend, Wales were outclassed by a dominant New Zealand team who look to be regaining serious momentum ahead of the World Cup. Wales 69-year wait for a victory over the All Blacks goes on as they lost 23-55. It was better news for Scotland, however, who claimed a vital 28-12 victory over Fiji at Murrayfield. The result was perhaps more important than the performance for Scotland after last week’s agonising one-point defeat to Australia. With the All Blacks to face next weekend, it was massively important for Scotland to come away with a victory against a tough Fiji outfit.
